About this product
This is an ONU on a stick: a full XGS-PON optical network unit shrunk into an SFP+ module that plugs into the SFP+ cage of a router, switch or media converter, so you can drop the ISP's separate ONT box and its extra power brick. The first thing to get right is the standard, because the two are not interchangeable. XGS-PON runs at 10 Gb/s with 1270 nm upstream and 1577 nm downstream and uses SC/APC angled connectors; GPON runs at 2.5/1.25 Gb/s with 1310 nm upstream and 1490 nm downstream and normally uses SC/UPC. Put an XGS-PON stick on a GPON line, or the reverse, and it simply will not register - so confirm with your provider which standard your line runs and check the fibre connector colour on your own patch lead (green APC vs blue UPC). Second, an ONU stick is only as useful as your ISP allows: most operators authenticate the ONT by serial number, MAC or a registration password, so you will often need to clone those onto the stick or have the ISP whitelist it. Make sure your router has a genuine SFP+ port (a 1 GbE SFP cage will not do) and that your provider permits third-party ONTs. The firmware listed here exposes IP, SN and MAC management with a web interface at 192.168.11.1 - ask the seller whether it ships pre-configured for your operator, because a 10 Gb/s stick that cannot register is worse than the ONT you already own. These modules also run hot, which is why this one has a fan: leave airflow around the cage.

Pros & cons
Pros
- Puts a whole XGS-PON ONU into an SFP+ module, removing the ISP's separate ONT box and its extra power supply
- 10 Gb/s with 1270 nm upstream and 1577 nm downstream, aimed at XGS-PON lines running gigabit-plus plans
- Pre-installed 8311 firmware with IP, SN and MAC management and a web interface at 192.168.11.1
- Includes a fan - SFP+ modules of this class run hot, and forced airflow suits long sessions at full speed
Cons
- XGS-PON only - it will not register on a GPON line, and a GPON stick will not work on XGS-PON, so confirm your line standard first
- Most ISPs authenticate the ONT by serial number, MAC or a registration password; you usually need to clone those values or have the stick whitelisted
- Requires a genuine SFP+ port on your router or switch - a 1 GbE SFP cage will not do, and compatibility is not guaranteed
- The listing does not state which providers it is validated for - ask the seller whether it can be pre-configured for your ISP before buying
