About this product

CTO stands for chlorine, taste and odour, and that is exactly the job this compressed carbon block cartridge is built for: it reduces chlorine and the taste and smell that come with it, and it traps fine sediment while doing so. What it is not is a reverse-osmosis membrane - carbon block does not strip dissolved minerals or salts from water, so if your goal is lower TDS rather than better-tasting water, this is the wrong stage and you need the membrane. Before ordering, match the cartridge to your housing: diameter, length and the end fitting all vary, and Ecowater units are sold with more than one cartridge size. Budget for it as a consumable, since the rated volume in litres is what you will actually get through before the taste starts to slip.

Pros & cons

Pros

  • Targets chlorine, taste and odour directly - the reason most people replace this stage at all
  • Carbon block also holds back fine sediment, protecting the stages after it
  • Stated as an original Ecowater part, which matters for fit on a branded housing
  • The listing includes installation in the seller's terms, worth confirming when you order

Cons

  • Does not replace reverse osmosis - carbon block will not lower dissolved solids or salt content
  • Diameter, length and end fitting must match your housing; Ecowater units take more than one size
  • Consumable: the rated volume is what you get before performance starts to drop
